Reasons Why You Have Dark Circles Under Eyes – Revealed!
If you have dark circles under eyes, you might think that you have a medical problem. The truth is that it is most likely not caused by any medical or internal problem, although it is one of the top two problems that dermatologists are concerned about.
One thing is for sure though, having these dark circles and eye bags will get you looks that are embarrassing, humiliating, and it will definitely make you look a lot older than your age because you’ll appear stressed out and overworked.
While it’s usually important to find out why you are having a particular problem, oftentimes it’s not easy to know 100%. Even when you go to a doctor, he or she can’t even tell for sure. It’s normally a matter of process of elimination. By this I mean you need to understand the risk factors, and then remove them one at a time. By doing this you can narrow down the cause. Of course, more importantly you can then move onto a solution. This is where I hope you consider natural solutions first.
So, before discussing natural methods to help get rid of dark circles under eyes…
….it’s important that you first know some probable causes as to why you have these. Namely:
- Nasal congestion – When you are experiencing nasal congestion, the veins from your eyes drain onto the nose area and in the end this leads to darker and dilated eyes and under eyes.
- Eyelid swelling – Because of gravity, some fluids swell and form in your eyelids as you sleep, thus leading to dark circles. (Hence some people finding some success to remove dark circles by keeping their heads elevated at night while they sleep)
- From other skin diseases – There are other skin conditions that lead to dark under eyes like atopic eczema.
- Inherited – Yes, even dark circles can be congenital because of your parents’ genes.
- Lack of sleep – Most people know that the reason for dark circles under eyes can be lack of sleep. While it’s a very “generic” reason it is a factor in some cases
- Lifestyle – If you are smoking or you are exposed to UVA light too often, you will have dark eye bags. You diet also plays a big role in my opinion as well.
- Womanly cycles – When you are pregnant or you are having your monthly period, your skin will look pale; thus, your under eyes, even if they’re not that dark, will show.
- Make-up reactions – If you like putting on eye liner under your eyes and you are allergic to it or you do not remove it properly, it might affect your under eyes. It’s very important to consistently remove your makeup at night. I touch on that in this post where I also included a nice video on a method to remove your makeup with olive oil.
- Vitamin intake – Less vitamin intake can also lead to having dark eye bags. Again, this goes back to #6 in this list regarding lifestyle and diet
Now that you know the causes, it is now time to know the natural remedies you can use to prevent those dark circles under eyes from darkening even more.
- Slices of cucumber – Put cold slices of cucumber on your eyes for about 20 minutes. You can also use potatoes. By doing this, you will be able to let the blood circulation in your under eye area flow better.
- Almond powder + milk cream – Mix these two ingredients and gently massage it on the affected area. This is a good home remedy and is best done before you sleep.
- Lemon or tomato juice – A drop of lemon or tomato juice under your eyes will also help in eliminating dark circles. However, when you are doing this, make sure that you do not spill juice into your eyes because it might hurt. These fruits have high acidity.
- Diet – Adjust your diet. If you have been drinking lots of caffeinated drinks, it would be best if you cut down on it a bit. Fatty foods and sugared foods and drinks also lead to this. Make sure that you take everything in moderation.
These are natural dark circles under eyes remedies that you can follow. This is a better way to eliminate dark circles instead on relying on eye creams that do not work and even lead to side effects causing your dark circles under eyes to darken more.

Hi! How would I know if the cause of my dark circles is because of poor circulation or if it is hyperpigmentation or both?
Hi Marie – it’s difficult to tell sometimes, but more often than not it’s because of poor circulation. That’s why my face exercise program works for so many people, because the exercises help the circulation around the eyes. In my opinion, the only way to know what the problem is, is to try different solutions. If it’s poor circulation than usually getting exercise, eating right, doing face exercises, and generally treating your body well will fix the problem. Hyperpigmentation is often the results of eye creams and eye makeup reacting to your face, or it can be hereditary. In these cases I am a true believer is changes in diet and lifestyle, as well as natural remedies to help the skin back to normal.
